Review of Health & Safety Reporting in FTSE-100 Mining Companies

Transparent Consulting has reviewed how FTSE-100 mining companies reported on their impact on employees

Across 12 Mining companies, the focus was on health and safety indicators (only one company reported an 'employee engagement' survey). We found some positive signs: falling injury rates and fatality rates in many companies; gradually increasing content in reporting. However, there were also serious causes for concern:

  • Widely varying definitions of key health and safety metrics, making comparisons very challenging
  • Reported injury rates that were as much as 10 times higher in the highest cases than in others.
  • A high and worsening fatality rate at Vedanta

Our report sets out both the positive and negative aspects of current reporting. We argue that a move to greater consistency of Health and Safety metrics would benefit employees and shareholders alike. In the absence of any particular national body able to enforce common standards across mining companies with multinational operations, we suggest that investors are well placed to help mining companies co-ordinate a move to more effective reporting.
